An International Wind Turbine Gearbox Standard

Gear Technology published "An International Wind Turbine Gearbox Standard" in the July issue which is interesting from the perspective of how the international standards process works to improve reliability. I talked this morning with the author, Bill Bradley, former Vice President of the AGMA Technical Division. He currently serves as a technical editor for Gear Technology and as a consultant.

Bill examines the role of standards in specifying and evaluating products in the purchasing process and mentions the importance of standards in helping manufacturers penetrate or protect markets. The article is about the development of ANSI / AGMA / AWEA 6006-A03 Standard for Design and Specification of Gearboxes for Wind Turbines, described in part as "a tool whereby wind turbine and gearbox manufacturers can communicate and understand each other's needs in developing a gearbox specification for wind turbine applications."

The history of AGMA standards development is discussed, along with the ANSI, ISO and IEC roles in standards development.

Software to Calculate Gas or Liquid Flow & Pressure Drop

Today I came across software on CNET that will size orifice plates for given design conditions, compute pressure drop for a given flow, or flow for a given pressure drop. This software is designed for gas or liquid orifices. You can download the ISO-5167 2003 6.5 application from CNET and evaluate it for yourself.

There's no connection between ANSI, ISO or AGA and NorCraft Software (this is not an endorsement of the software or the company).

NEMA ANSI C12 Smart Grid Meter Standards

A new collection of NEMA ANSI C12 standards for Smart Grid Metering was added to the ANSI standards store.

The NEMA ANSI C12 Smart Grid Meter Package provides all parts of the NEMA ANSI C12 standards. These define requirements for electricity metering, watt hour meter sockets, device data tables, meter interfacing to data communication networks and type 2 optical ports. Included are performance criteria for thermal demand meters, mechanical demand registers and phase shifting devices used in metering. Test methods for transformer-rated meters and self contained "A" base watt hour meter are included in this package as well as a watt hour safety standard.
