ISO/DIS 45001 - Occupational Health and Safety

ISO/DIS 45001

ISO 45001 is in the Draft International Stage, and from February 12, 2016 to May 12, 2016 (2016-02-12 to 2016-05-12 under ISO 8601 guidelines), ISO national member bodies were invited to vote and comment on the guidelines written into the standard. This new standard for occupational health and safety management systems is meant to replace OHSAS 18001.

ISO/DIS 45001 - Occupational health and safety management systems - Requirements with guidance for use addresses the guidelines needed for an organization to adopt an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system.

According to the International Labour Association (ILA), over 2.3 million people die each year from work-related accidents and diseases. ISO/DIS 45001 seeks to reduce and eliminate work-related injury and ill health from a compliant organization.

The standard accomplishes this goal through several means. Initially, this involves simply identifying safety management objectives and concerns. In carrying out the system, ISO/DIS 45001 recommends committing top management to the plan and evaluating its performance to assure success. In addition, it acknowledges the importance for each organization to consider its own context in establishing the scope of a specific OH&S management system.

ISO/DIS 45001 incorporates several concepts that have been responsible for forming the significant changes to the new revisions of other ISO management standards. The OH&S management system that is addressed in the standard is founded on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), in which all levels of personnel in the organization work together at each step of the cycle and take action for continual improvement.

In addition, like other ISO management systems, ISO/DIS 45001 makes use of Annex SL. Annex SL is a format that provides a shared structure and common terms so that separate standards can be more readily used together. Through simplification of the compliance process, Annex SL allows ISO/DIS 45001 to be used easily with standards like ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
