Corrigenda and Amendments to ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015

Corrigenda Amendments ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015

ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Cor2:2017, a corrigendum to ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015 - Information technology - Generic coding of moving pictures and associated audio information - Part 1: Systems, has been released.

ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015 is an international standard that deals with the combining of one or more streams of video and audio, in addition to other data, into single and multiple streams that can ultimately be used for storage or transmission. This specification imposes syntactical and semantic rules on the system coding, which is covered through the sets of applications optimizing the transport stream and the program stream. The system layer of the coding detailed in this standard supports six basic functions:

  1. the synchronization of multiple compressed streams on decoding
  2. the interleaving of multiple compressed streams into a single stream
  3. the initialization of buffering for decoding start up
  4. continuous buffer management
  5. time identification
  6. multiplexing and signaling of various components in a system stream

As we previously have discussed, a corrigendum is a document that corrects editorial efforts, technical errors, and ambiguities. Therefore, it does not add to or expand the scope of the original standard, but it touches up the content of the document. Through ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Cor2:2017, alterations have been made to the system target decoder buffer sizes for high efficiency video coding (HEVC), as well as miscellaneous editorial issues.

This is actually not the first corrigendum to ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015. Prior to its release, ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Cor1:2016, has been responsible for including a correction to the PES header and removing the sematic elements from clause 2.6.61.

Furthermore, there have been 6 amendments to the original standard. Amendments, unlike corrigenda, alter the previously agreed upon technical guidelines featured in an international standard. This can attribute to varying impacts on their scope. The amendments to the international standard for the system layer of the coding of moving pictures include:

ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Amd1:2015 - Amendment 1: Delivery of timeline for external data
ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Amd2:2016 - Amendment 2: Carriage of layered HEVC
ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Amd3:2016 - Amendment 3: Carriage of green metadata in MPEG2 systems
ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Amd4:2016 - Amendment 4: New profiles and levels for MPEG4 audio descriptor
ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Amd5:2016 - Amendment 5: Carriage of MPEGH 3D audio over MPEG2 systems
ISO/IEC 13818-1:2015/Amd6:2016 - Amendment 6: Carriage of Quality Metadata in MPEG-2 Systems
